RULES AND REGULATIONS

Entry deadline (determined by postmark) is October 1st, 2016.

Students my send in their own entries provided that that they include the teacher's signature.

Send in a separate entry blank for each division entered.

 

Contestants enter according to their age as of November 18, 2016.

Contestants may perform any work by Franz Liszt.

Simplified versions are not acceptable.

Transcriptions and paraphrases done by Liszt are acceptable.

 

 

Time limits for the daytime auditions:

 

          Piano           Division I               10 minutes

                             Division II              10 minutes

                             Division III             10 minutes

                             Division IV             10 minutes

                             Division V              10 minutes

                             Division VI             15 minutes

                             Division VII           15 minutes

          Organ           Division VIII          B.A.C.H. Fantasie und Fugue

          Voice            Division IX            2 Songs required 

           Voice            Division X             20 minutes

           Piano            Division Xi            30 minutes

 

Piano Divisions I-V may perform a composition that is slightly longer than their suggested time limit (e.g. Mephisto Waltz.)

Piano Division VI (Longer Work) is for works that are sig­nificantly longer than ten minutes. The complete piece should be ready but the audition may be limited to 15 minutes.

Piano Division VII (Concerto) includes any work by Liszt for piano and orchestra. Contestants are responsible for paying the accompanist.

Organ Division VIII requires only B-A-C-H. Contestants will be given sufficient rehearsal time on the competition organ to set their registrations and rehearse the piece.

Voice Division IX requires "O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst" and one other song by Liszt. Both must be sung in the original language. Vocalists should provide their own accompanist. For a copy of "O lieb", contact Judith Neslény (626-798-1562). A second song is readily available in the Dover publication Franz Liszt: Thirty Songs.

Voice Division X-- New York City -- offers the winner an all expense paid trip to New York City to present a solo recital of the music of Liszt. Altough the recital will require 50 minutes of music, only 20 minutes is required for the November competition. The judges will take into consideration not only the November performance, but also the coherence of the complete proposed concert.

Piano Division XI -- Budapest -- offers the solo winner an all-expense paid trip to Budapest to present a solo recital of the music of Liszt at the prestigious Liszt Ferenc Museum and Research Center. The recital will take place in the same Hall where Liszt taught his students. Although the recital will require 50 minutes of music, only 30 minutes will be required for the November competition. The judges will take into consideration not only the November performance but also the coherence of the complete proposed program. The November performance should exhibit that the contestant will have complete technical and musical mastery of the proposed program.

Contestants may enter more than one division. They must use  separate repertoire and pay the entry fee for each division.

All music (except four-hand and two-piano works) must be performed  from memory. One copy of the music must be provided for the judges.  Photocopies are not allowed unless the music is out-of-print.

First Place Winners in each division will perform in the Sunday  Evening Concert.

Other awards in each division may include Second, Third, Fourth  and Fifth Places and Honorable Mentions. "Best Performance"  awards will be given for pieces chosen by the donors. Awarding of prizes is at the discretion of the judges. It is not necessary to award all prizes.

Every contestant will receive a book about Liszt. Additional awards  include cash prizes, plaques, portraits and CDs.

All awards will be presented at the Evening Concert. Any winners not present at the concert will forfeit their awards.
